Protecting Shaft Kiln Steel Support Structures Using High Emissivity Coatings

Emisshield STG-3 (US Patent 7,105,047) was used on steel support structures of a shaft kiln that operates at a temperature of 1800°F.

The Problem

The impingement of flames from the furnace exhaust of the shaft kiln caused the support structure of the kiln to warp and sag. It was not possible to correct this poor design, and the steel structure reconstructed in the original design had to be protected from heat transfer due to flame impingement.

The Solution

The steel support structure of the shaft kiln was grit blasted to reach to the bare metal. It was then washed using DIRL- LUM 603 for grease removal. It was coated with Emisshield STG-3 with a spray gun to protect the structure from heat. The EMISSHIELD coating was air dried for one day before the structure was erected.

The Benefits

Because of the coating, heat that was radiated from the exhaust of the furnace was absorbed and re-radiated back to the plant atmosphere. Temperature measurements taken on the support structure showed that the surface temperature was around 555°F, which was low enough to ensure protection of the support structure. The coated steel support structure was in service for a period three years after the application of EMISSHIELD.
